Reality and Competition Shows Worth Your Time
Reality TV has a reputation it mostly earned, and a few shows that don't deserve it. This list is the second kind: competitions with real skill or real strategy, plus a handful of docu-series that treat their people with care. It's for anyone who wants something lighter than drama without feeling the evening was wasted.
Most of these fall into two camps. Skill shows such as The Great British Bake Off, Top Chef, Culinary Class Wars and The Great Pottery Throw Down are about people being good at something, and they're gentle by design. Strategy shows such as The Traitors, Survivor and The Amazing Race are about people managing each other, and the fun is in the scheming. The dating shows sit apart: Love on the Spectrum is kind, Love Island USA is chaos, and both are honest about which one they are.
For a mixed room with kids, Survivor, The Amazing Race, Nailed It!, Lego Masters and Making It are the safe picks; Love Island USA and Love Is Blind are not. Most of the competitions also work as background TV, and two, Physical: 100 and Culinary Class Wars, are Korean with subtitles. For more low-key viewing, see Cozy Shows to Unwind With and Background Shows for Working; for nonfiction with more weight, Documentaries Worth Watching.
The Traitors (US)
Series · 2023Mostly celebrities and reality stars in a Scottish castle play a murder-mystery game: a few are secretly Traitors picking off the rest, who try to vote them out at a round table. Alan Cumming hosts in outrageous outfits. Three straight Emmys for best reality competition, and the most fun group watch on television.
The Great British Bake Off
Series · 2010Sold in the US as The Great British Baking Show. Amateur bakers in a tent in an English field, judged firmly but kindly, with no villains and no sob-story edits. The early Mary Berry seasons are the gentlest; later ones get sillier, but the format is so good it hardly matters.
Survivor
Series · 2000The original strategy game: castaways on an island vote each other out, and a jury of voted-out players chooses the winner. More than fifty seasons in, it's still the best social game on TV, and clean enough for families with tweens. If you're new, David vs. Goliath and Cagayan are popular places to start.
Taskmaster
Series · 2015Five comedians compete in absurd tasks set by Alex Horne and judged, with deliberate unfairness, by Greg Davies. Each series has a fresh cast, so you can start anywhere. Funny enough by ear to half-watch, clever enough to deserve your full attention. British, and the uncut episodes swear a lot.
Love on the Spectrum (US)
Series · 2022Autistic adults looking for love, filmed with obvious affection and no condescension. It's funny because the people are funny, not because the show is laughing at them. The kindest reality show on this page, and the one most likely to make you cry happy tears.
Top Chef
Series · 2006Professional chefs, rigorous judging and food you'll wish you could taste. The most respected cooking competition in American TV, because the challenges test real skill and the winners usually deserve it. With twenty-plus seasons, start with a recent one; Kristen Kish now hosts.
Queer Eye
Series · 2018Five experts help one deserving person rebuild their home, wardrobe and confidence each episode, and you'll cry at most of them. It ended in 2026 after ten seasons, so it's complete. Formulaic on purpose: the formula is kindness, and it works best one episode at a time.
RuPaul's Drag Race
Series · 2009Drag queens compete in sewing, comedy, acting and lip-syncs for the crown. Camp, sharp and more skill-based than people expect. With so many seasons and spinoffs, start with a well-loved one; the All Stars editions are a good shortcut once you know the format. Plenty of innuendo.
The Amazing Race
Series · 2001Teams of two race around the world for a million dollars, reading clues and fighting over maps. The best travel show disguised as a competition, and watching couples fall apart in foreign airports is half the fun. Clean enough for families with kids from about nine.
Love Island USA
Series · 2019Single people in a villa, recoupling and backstabbing on camera nearly every night for weeks. Pure, knowing trash, and its 2025 season took over social media for the whole summer. Lots of drinking and sex under the covers; not one for the kids.
Physical: 100
Series · 2023A hundred of South Korea's fittest people, from athletes to soldiers to bodybuilders, face brutal physical challenges and are whittled down round by round. It's a game show, but the effort is real and the respect between rivals is moving. In Korean with subtitles, and easy to follow even half-reading.
Alone
Series · 2015Survivalists are dropped into the wilderness alone, filming themselves, and the last one left wins. No host, no crew, just hunger, cold and isolation. Slow and strangely gripping. Hunting and butchering animals happens on camera, which some viewers won't want to see.
Nailed It!
Series · 2018Amateur bakers try to recreate elaborate cakes and fail spectacularly. Host Nicole Byer and chocolatier Jacques Torres laugh with them rather than at them. Short, silly and ideal for a mixed-age room: kids from about nine love the disasters, adults love Nicole's steady innuendo.
Lego Masters (US)
Series · 2020Teams of adult builders make huge, wild Lego creations against the clock, with Will Arnett hosting. The judging is generous and the builds are genuinely impressive. One of the best family competition shows around, and kids will want to build the moment it ends.
Making It
Series · 2018Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman host crafters making things from wood, fabric and paper, judged kindly. As low-stakes as Bake Off, with better puns. It ran only three seasons, so it's an easy one to finish together.
The Great Pottery Throw Down
Series · 2015Potters compete in a British workshop, and judge Keith Brymer Jones cries when a piece moves him, which is often. The same gentle format as Bake Off, applied to clay. Watching a pot collapse on the wheel turns out to be riveting.
Dancing with the Stars
Series · 2005Celebrities paired with professional dancers compete on live TV, judged by a panel and voted on by viewers. Recent seasons have pulled in a younger audience through social media, and it feels livelier than it has in years. Sparkly and easy to watch with kids from about nine, though many routines are meant to look sexy.
Love Is Blind
Series · 2020Singles date through a wall and get engaged before they meet face to face, then try to make it to the altar. The premise is absurd and the show knows it. Best watched with someone so you can argue about the couples. Lots of drinking and adult talk.
Couples Therapy (2019)
Series · 2019Real couples in real sessions with psychoanalyst Orna Guralnik, filmed with hidden cameras. The most honest show on this page: no twists, no winners, just people working through it. Absorbing, sometimes hard to watch, and quietly useful if you're in a relationship yourself.
Culinary Class Wars
Series · 2024Unknown cooks take on famous chefs in a Korean cooking competition with enormous sets and fiercely serious judging. Tense, beautifully filmed and a worldwide hit. In Korean with subtitles. If you love Top Chef, this is its stylish, high-stakes cousin.
