Survivor: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated TV-PG.

A long-running strategy-and-endurance contest that many families watch together with tweens. Strangers are stranded in remote places, compete in physical challenges and vote one another out, so scheming, lying and broken alliances are the core of the game. Strong words are bleeped, swimsuits are skimpy, and nudity is blurred. Real injuries and medical evacuations happen, and contestants sometimes kill chickens, fish or other animals for food. A few seasons include uglier moments, such as a contestant outed as transgender at Tribal Council and a storyline about a man's unwanted touching of women. It suits about 10 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Fighting is banned, but real injuries are shown: burns, infections and broken or dislocated bones, some serious enough for evacuation by helicopter. Contestants spear fish and slaughter chickens for food, and in season 2 a man stabs a wild pig and smears its blood on his face.

Language

Mild

Audible words include 'bitch,' 'ass,' 'hell,' 'damn' and 'pissed,' plus misuse of God's name. F-words and s-words are bleeped, which happens fairly often during heated arguments and votes.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Skimpy swimsuits and flirting, with nudity blurred when people bathe or lose a suit. In season 8 a naked contestant makes unwanted contact with a woman, who later quits, and season 39 follows several women's complaints that a man kept touching them.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Beer, wine and other drinks sometimes come as rewards, and some contestants get tipsy. Smoking is very occasional, and no underage drinking or drug use is noted.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Medical emergencies, such as a contestant falling into a campfire and being flown out, can be startling, and blindside votes leave players in tears. Hunger and harsh conditions add tension, but nothing is meant to scare.

Sensitive topics

  • Animal death

Worth talking about

Survivor rewards people who break promises. Talk about whether the game makes betrayal okay, and which players your teen admires and why.
