Taskmaster: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.

A silly, clever comedy game show best for teens who can handle constant swearing. Five British comedians tackle absurd challenges set by a towering host and his deadpan assistant, then get scored in the studio. Nothing is scary or violent, but the uncut broadcast episodes are full of f-words and s-words, along with crude jokes about sex and bodies and the odd bit of comic partial nudity. That language is the main reason we suggest 14. The official YouTube channel posts bleeped editions that many families use with younger kids, though the bleeps don't catch absolutely everything.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Slapstick only: contestants smash, throw and wreck things to complete tasks, and jokes or stories sometimes mention violence for laughs. Nobody is hurt in any realistic way.

Language

Strong

Swearing runs through the uncut episodes, including frequent f-words, s-words and British terms like arse. UK broadcasts air after the 9 p.m. watershed with strong language warnings. Official bleeped edits on YouTube remove most of it.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Plenty of innuendo and crude jokes about sex and body parts, and some later series lean further into sex talk. Comic partial nudity turns up now and then, such as a contestant crouching nearly naked in a cupboard. No sex scenes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Contestants and hosts sometimes joke or tell stories about drinking and drug use, including marijuana. The guides we read describe this as talk rather than anything shown.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing scary. The only tension is a ticking clock and the host's mock-stern judging, which is played entirely for laughs.

Worth talking about

Contestants often win by reading the task's wording more carefully than everyone else. Ask your teen which creative solutions impressed them, and whether bending the rules ever felt unfair.
