RuPaul's Drag Race: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-14.

A big-hearted drag competition with very adult humor that fits older teens more than kids. Queens compete in sewing, acting, comedy and lip-sync challenges, and the show celebrates self-expression, LGBTQ+ community and resilience. Many contestants share stories of family rejection, HIV and bullying, and in season 10 one describes being raped at a college party. The humor is the issue: frequent f-words, the c-word, jokes about sex acts, suggestive dancing and blurred nudity. Drinks flow backstage, and arguments get catty. The constant strong language and sexual jokes put it at about 15.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

No real violence. An acting challenge includes a slap in the face, and one early lip sync gets physical when a contestant lifts another off the floor. Heated verbal confrontations with insults happen regularly.

Language

Strong

Frequent f-words and s-words, left unbleeped in early seasons and bleeped later, plus the c-word, 'bitch' and 'pussy.' Sexual slang is part of the comedy, and early seasons punned on an anti-trans slur until that segment was dropped in 2014.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Constant innuendo and jokes about sex acts, suggestive and pole dancing, and challenges that mimic sexual positions for camp effect. Contestants change on camera, with bare torsos shown and nudity blurred.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Cocktails and mixed drinks are visible, especially backstage, and an alcohol brand sponsored some earlier seasons. Reviewers do not note drunkenness or drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Nothing scary. Emotional moments come from blowup arguments, tearful eliminations and contestants' stories of family rejection, bullying and HIV. A season 10 contestant recounts being raped in college, and a 2026 challenge draws on a real 1999 hate-crime murder.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault

Worth talking about

Talk about why the show's message of self-love resonates with so many viewers, and where the line falls between playful 'reading' and real cruelty.
