Bridesmaids: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for some strong sexuality, and language throughout.

A raunchy, big-hearted comedy about female friendship that's best saved for older teens. Annie, whose life is falling apart, becomes maid of honor for her best friend and spirals into jealousy of a glamorous rival. It opens with a long, loud sex scene played for laughs, with nudity implied but not shown, and the jokes about sex, body parts and bodily functions keep coming. One count found about 20 f-words and 30 s-words. There's also a drunken, pill-fueled meltdown on a plane and a gross-out food poisoning scene. The sexual content and constant language put it at 16.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Slapstick only: a scuffle and a bite on a plane, two women pelting each other with tennis balls, a minor hit-and-run, and Annie tearing down the decorations at a bridal shower.

Language

Strong

Frequent strong language; one count found about 20 f-words and 30 s-words, plus one c-word aimed at a young girl, crude terms for genitals and sex acts, and whore. Teenage sons swear at their mother.

Sex and nudity

Strong

The opening is an extended, played-for-laughs sex scene with the woman in a bra; nudity is implied, not shown. Later come an implied night together, a woman driving topless with her chest hidden, a glimpse of a sex tape, a fake oral sex gag and frank talk.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Champagne and wine flow at parties, and Annie chugs from a bottle. On a flight she takes a friend's prescription sedative with Scotch, gets badly impaired and gets the plane diverted, all played for comedy.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing scary. The heavier moments are emotional, as Annie loses her job, her apartment and, for a while, her best friend.

Worth talking about

Annie feels she's being replaced as her best friend's life changes. Talk about how jealousy can push us to act in ways we regret, and how to repair a friendship.
