Veep: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A savage political satire best saved for mature teens 16 and up. Over seven seasons, a vain, profane vice president and her bumbling staff chase power, mostly by insulting each other with inventive obscenities. F-words come in torrents and sexual talk is constant and crude, with jokes about abortion, harassment and sexual violence, yet very little is shown: no nudity, mostly drinking, and one pill-popping consultant. A parent's death in season 5 is handled as dark comedy. The swearing and crude sexual humor, rather than anything on screen, set the age.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Almost no physical violence. Dialogue references mass shootings and an assassination, and sexual violence and harassment are treated as joke material rather than shown; a male staffer is sexually harassed in a later season.

Language

Strong

Relentless. F-words land in nearly every scene, at least a dozen in one season 5 episode by Plugged In's count, alongside s-words, a c-word, 'dick,' 'piss,' slurs including 'retard' and an anti-Semitic slur, and frequent misuse of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Sex is talked about far more than shown: affairs, a politician seeking sex from interns, erection jokes, masturbation and bestiality jokes, STDs and prostitution. No nudity is reported.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Characters drink often and joke about being drunk. In one season 5 episode a campaign consultant takes a pile of pills and behaves erratically.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Nothing scary. In season 5 the vice president's mother has a stroke and is taken off life support, which the show plays as pitch-black comedy rather than grief.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Nearly every character in Veep chooses image over doing the right thing. Ask your teen which parts of the satire seem exaggerated and which feel uncomfortably close to real politics.
