21 Jump Street: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, drug material, teen drinking and some violence.
A raunchy, very funny action comedy best saved for older teens. Two bumbling young cops go undercover as high school students to bust a ring selling a synthetic drug that has already killed a student. The jokes lean hard on sex, drugs and nonstop profanity, with about 125 f-words by one count. The heroes supply beer and stolen pot for a teen party and are forced to take the drug themselves, and the shootout finale includes a gory gag in which a man's penis is shot off. Age 16 reflects the language, drug content, crude sexual humor and bloody climax.
What's in it
Violence
StrongMostly comic but bloody in spots: a gunfight leaves several people dead, one shot through the neck with blood pumping out, a man burns in a car, and a gory gag shows a man's genitals shot off. Fistfights and a stabbing.
Language
StrongPervasive: one review counted about 125 f-words and at least 70 s-words, plus frequent crude terms for genitals and sex, a few uses of the n-word, and God's name misused about 20 times.
Sex and nudity
ModerateConstant crude sex talk and gestures. A drunk student tries to unzip a cop's pants, a teacher and an undercover cop have sex with movement and sounds, and a brief threesome shows three people undressed together from the side. A severed penis is shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongA synthetic drug that killed a student drives the plot, and the two leads are forced to take it, then hallucinate and act wildly. They steal marijuana from evidence and serve beer to teens at a party where pot is smoked. Cocaine is joked about.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNo real scares. Tension comes from shootouts and car chases played for laughs, and a student's drug death is mentioned rather than dwelt on.
Sensitive topics
- Overdose
Worth talking about
The cops discover that the high school pecking order they remember has flipped. Ask your teen how labels like popular or nerd play out at their school and how fixed they really are.
