Rick and Morty: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A sharp, gross and often nihilistic adult cartoon that is not meant for kids despite the animation. An alcoholic genius drags his anxious 14-year-old grandson on interdimensional adventures full of gory deaths, crude sexual humor and frequent f-words, bleeped on broadcast but intact in uncensored versions. Rick's drinking and emotional manipulation of Morty are central. A season 1 episode has an adult try to rape Morty, a season 2 episode shows Rick attempting suicide, and his backstory includes the killing of his wife and young daughter. Season 1 aired as TV-14; many later episodes are TV-MA. Age 16 reflects the gore, language and dark themes across nine seasons.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic cartoon violence throughout: shootouts, dismemberment, smashed brains and bloody surgery, with deaths often played for laughs. In a season 1 episode an adult character tries to rape 14-year-old Morty in a bar bathroom; Morty fights him off, badly shaken.

Language

Strong

Heavy profanity. One reviewed episode had about a dozen f-words and three s-words, bleeped on Adult Swim but clear from context and unbleeped in uncensored digital releases. Hell, damn, ass and bitch are routine.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Frequent crude sexual humor and innuendo. Morty is given a sex robot and fathers a child with it, Rick has sex and parties with a hive-mind ex, a dream shows a teen girl's upper breasts, and background art is often suggestive.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Rick drinks constantly, and his alcoholism drives much of his reckless and cruel behavior, mostly played as comedy. In a season 2 episode he drinks and uses drugs with an alien ex during a party binge. Other characters drink wine and liquor.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Body horror and grotesque creatures are common, and the tone can turn bleak and existential. Rick attempts suicide in a season 2 episode, Morty is nearly raped in season 1, and flashbacks show the bomb that killed Rick's wife and young daughter.

Worth talking about

Rick is brilliant but cruel and dependent on alcohol; ask whether the show wants viewers to admire him or feel sorry for him, and how his pressure affects Morty.
