Russian Doll: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A sharp, darkly funny puzzle-box series for older teens and adults. A New York software engineer keeps dying on her 36th birthday and waking up at her party; season 2 sends her back in time into her pregnant mother's body. Expect constant f-words, chain smoking, heavy drinking and drug use including a laced joint, crude sex talk and implied sex, brief toplessness, and repeated sudden deaths, some bloody. A main character is revealed to have died by suicide, and a mentally ill mother and the death of a beloved mother figure weigh on the story. We suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateThe heroine dies again and again: hit by a cab, tumbling down stairs, drowning, in elevator accidents, often suddenly and with bloodied faces; one leaves blood streaming from her eyes and nose. Alan dies repeatedly too. Season 2 adds shoving, threats and a robbery.
Language
StrongConstant strong language: one review counted about 30 f-words in the first episode and roughly 50 in the season 2 opener, plus s-words, pussy, prick, dick and crude gestures.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrank talk about oral, anal and group sex; implied off-screen sex; groping; a man Nadia has just met slips his hand down her pants at the party. Brief bare breasts, including a topless dancer in season 2; a man wears a strap-on, nothing explicit shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongNadia smokes two packs a day and drinks constantly. Partygoers smoke a joint said to be laced with cocaine that turns out to hold ketamine. In season 2 a pregnant woman is fed cocaine, amphetamines and quaaludes; a dealer recurs.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateRepeated deaths, rotting fruit and people vanishing from the loop build creeping dread in season 1. Flashbacks to Nadia's childhood with a mentally ill mother are painful, a beloved mother figure dies in season 2, and Nazi-era theft in 1944 Budapest is revisited.
Sensitive topics
- Suicide
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Nadia and Alan only escape by looking after each other. Talk about how guilt carried from childhood shapes adults, and where someone with dark thoughts can turn for help.
