The House with a Clock in Its Walls: parents' guide
Best for ages 10 and up. Rated PG for thematic elements including sorcery, some action, scary images, rude humor and language.
A spooky fantasy adventure that works for kids around 10 who enjoy being scared. Recently orphaned Lewis moves in with his warlock uncle and accidentally raises a dead sorcerer from the grave, setting off a string of haunted-house scares: lunging automatons, living dolls, snapping jack-o'-lanterns and several jump scares. Lewis is also bullied at school and still grieves his parents, who died in a car crash before the story begins. Language is mild and there is no sexual content. The frequent scares and grim backstory, more than any single scene, are why we suggest 10.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateMostly magical: energy blasts, an explosion that kills a warlock with blood on his mouth and a spattered book, and attacking pumpkins, books and furniture. Lewis is caged over upturned swords, cuts his hand for a spell, and a bully punches him.
Language
MildMild: Plugged In counted four uses of 'damn' and one 'hell,' plus exclamations like 'oh my God.' The two adult leads trade playful insults such as 'old hag' and 'Q-tip,' and a bully calls Lewis 'runt.'
Sex and nudity
MildA married couple shares a passionate kiss. A spell gives Uncle Jonathan a naked baby's body, and he later turns back into a naked adult; objects block the view each time. A demon appears shirtless in a flashback.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNo smoking or drug use, and two guides list no drinking at all (Movieguide notes only a brief moment of alcohol). The adults do teach Lewis to play poker and bet, which some families may want to note.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateFrequent jump scares in a dark house full of moving dolls, automatons and a snapping hedge creature. A corpse claws out of a coffin in a night graveyard, the villains admit to murdering a neighbor for her bones, and a demon appears in a flashback.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Lewis breaks a promise to his uncle and uses forbidden magic to impress a classmate who then drops him. What makes fitting in so tempting, and what does Lewis learn about real friends?
