Dead End: Paranormal Park: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated TV-Y7.

A witty, warmhearted horror-comedy for tweens, best around 10 and up, about two teens who take jobs at a haunted theme park. Barney, who is trans, has left home partly because his grandmother verbally abuses him over his gender identity, and Norma, who is autistic, copes with anxiety and panic attacks; both find acceptance with their new friends. Demons, ghosts, possession and an out-of-body scare supply the frights, and the violence is comic. Language is mild, and the only romance is Barney's crush on a coworker, which ends in a kiss. The demonic premise may concern some families.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Comic, cartoon-style action: near falls from a ride, a demon king blasting other demons out of existence, and supernatural scuffles with no blood or lasting injury.

Language

Mild

Mild words like 'pissing' and 'stupid' turn up; reviewers report no stronger profanity in either season.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sexual content. Barney develops a crush on his coworker Logan, and the two share a kiss in the Season 1 finale.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, smoking or drug use is shown or noted by reviewers in either season.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Haunted rides, ghosts, creepy dolls and demons, including one that possesses Barney's dog. A team-building trap turns Norma's anxiety into a literal fear world, a dead actress possesses people, and in season 2 a falling chandelier knocks Barney's spirit out of his body.

Worth talking about

Barney's family struggles to accept him, while his friends support him as he is. Talk about what it looks like to make someone feel truly welcome, and how families can grow.
