Hocus Pocus 2: parents' guide
Best for ages 9 and up. Rated PG for action, macabre/suggestive humor and some language.
A campy Halloween sequel best for kids around 9 and up who can handle villains who openly plan to harm children. Two Salem teens accidentally bring back the Sanderson sisters, who want eternal youth and threaten to kill or torture the town's kids. The magic is mostly played for laughs, but there's witchcraft, jokes about serving the devil, a drop of blood drawn with a fingernail and a zombie who loses his head. Expect many uses of 'oh my God,' one 'damn,' virginity jokes and an unsupervised teen party. Age 9 tracks the menace and the macabre humor.
What's in it
Violence
MildFantasy action: the witches zap people with painful magic and fling them around, Winifred slaps her sister and nicks a teen's neck with a fingernail to draw blood, kids throw rocks, and zombie Billy loses his hand and head for laughs.
Language
MildOne 'damn,' around 15 uses of 'oh my God' and similar, 'Holy Lucifer,' and repeated gags swapping 'witch' for a rhyming insult. Name-calling includes 'idiot,' 'dolt' and 'hag.'
Sex and nudity
MildA child asks what a virgin is and an adult later jokes about it, embarrassing the teens. Kissing is mentioned, and Sarah's low-cut dress and a few Halloween costumes are revealing. Nothing sexual is shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildTeens hold plastic cups at a house party with no parents around, though the film never shows what's in them. The witches comically eat and drink beauty products. No drugs or smoking.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateAn opening flashback shows an older witch trying to take a young girl's soul, and the sisters are seen with nooses around their necks. They plot to drain the youth from Salem's children, lure kids with an enchanted song and call down storms.
Worth talking about
Winifred is tempted to choose power over her sisters, while Becca and Izzy stick by each other. Talk about what real friendship looks like when someone has a chance to put themselves first.
