ParaNorman: parents' guide

10+our pick

Best for ages 10 and up. Rated PG for scary action and images, thematic elements, some rude humor and language.

A smart, spooky stop-motion film about an 11-year-old outcast who can see ghosts, with a big heart under its zombie gags. It is darker than most animated films: decaying zombies lose body parts, a witch's curse tears through the town, and the mystery centers on a girl who was put to death for being different. Norman is bullied at school and doubted at home, and he watches a relative die of a heart attack. Language and innuendo stay mild. Best for kids around 10 who enjoy scary stories and are ready for grief, bullying and an angry mob.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Zombies shed ears, arms and a head; one is shot and another is hit by a car. A mob with weapons tries to burn City Hall, a witch's thorns nearly impale a family, and a bully punches and shoves kids.

Language

Mild

Mild: 'jackass,' 'hell,' 'ass,' 'pissed,' 'damnation,' 'sucks' and 'boobs,' with God and Jesus as exclamations. Insults like 'freak' and 'fatty' are frequent. A boy asks about 'the f-word,' but it is never said.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Light innuendo: a teen girl flirts hard with a muscular teen in a towel, a man ogles a paused aerobics video, an adult video store is mentioned, and a casino billboard shows cleavage.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Brief and easy to miss: teens and adults drink occasionally, a couple briefly staggers as if drunk, and Norman's great-uncle swallows pills from a table full of bottles. No smoking.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Rotting zombies, a corpse that falls on Norman, ghosts everywhere, and a furious witch whose storm rips through town. Norman sees his great-uncle die and learns a child was sentenced to death. Humor lightens many scenes.

Sensitive topics

  • Bullying
  • Death of a child

Worth talking about

The town turns on anyone it doesn't understand, from Norman to the so-called witch. Talk about how fear pushes groups to blame outsiders.
