Hocus Pocus: parents' guide
Best for ages 9 and up. Rated PG for some scary sequences, and for language.
A campy Halloween favorite that mixes broad comedy with genuinely creepy moments, best for kids who already enjoy a good scare. Three resurrected witches plan to drain the youth from Salem's children, and the opening shows them doing exactly that to a little girl, who dies (not graphically). There is a zombie whose mouth is sewn shut, a cat flattened by a bus, bullies who prey on younger kids, and a running joke about a teen boy being a virgin, plus flirting and adult innuendo. Language is mild. The child's death and steady innuendo are why it sits above the youngest grade schoolers.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateWitches drain a girl's life until she slumps over dead, three women are hanged (only their dangling feet are seen), a teen is choked and zapped with lightning, and the witches scream inside a burning kiln. A zombie loses his head without injury.
Language
MildMild: about a half-dozen uses of 'damn,' several exclamations using God's name, a 'go to hell,' and insults like 'jerk,' 'moron,' 'idiot' and 'wench.'
Sex and nudity
MildNo nudity, but plenty of innuendo: the plot hinges on a teen being a virgin, one witch flirts with teen boys and sits on a bus driver's lap, the driver makes suggestive remarks, a girl jokes about breasts, and bullies talk about peeping at girls.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateBrief: teen bullies ask about 'smokes' and mention hash, a boy doodles a marijuana leaf in class, a woman smokes at home, and parents drink at a Halloween party.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateWitches who want to feed on children, a zombie slicing open his stitched lips, a crypt of bones, kids tied up and caged, and a cat run over by a bus. Camp humor softens most of it, but the ending is bittersweet.
