The Diplomat: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A dialogue-heavy political thriller for older teens who can follow it, with constant swearing and some sex. Rated across all four seasons (2023 to 2026), including all eight season 4 episodes released October 15, 2026. Most of the show is tense conversation, but there are terrorist bombings and their bloody aftermath, a choking attack that leaves a pool of blood, an assassination attempt, and spouses who trade punches. Sex scenes are brief with rear nudity. A supporting character dies by suicide with a drug overdose in season 3, and characters smoke pot and misuse pills. We suggest 15 for the f-words and those themes.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateBombings drive the plot, with a season 1 car bomb and a deadly London blast with wounded shown in hospital. A woman is choked and her head cracks on the floor, leaving a pool of blood; the president is shot; a married couple trades punches.
Language
StrongConstant and strong: the lead uses f-words freely, and one count of the season 4 premiere found 14 f-words and seven s-words. Also 'motherf---ing,' 'bulls--t,' 'a--hole,' sexual slang like 'p---y,' and frequent use of God's and Jesus' names.
Sex and nudity
ModerateSex scenes are brief and not graphic, with male and female rear nudity, including skinny-dipping in season 1. Characters appear in underwear, infidelity and a season 3 affair are major plot threads, and a secretly recorded sexual encounter figures in season 2.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongCharacters drink constantly and occasionally smoke marijuana and cigarettes; pill misuse, including unprescribed oxycodone, comes up. A minor character is poisoned and dies, and in season 3 a supporting character takes a fatal overdose.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateTension, not terror: terror attacks, a nuclear-armed submarine crisis, an assassination attempt and an off-screen helicopter crash that kills a main character. Also: a suicide in season 3, a shooter's reported suicide in season 4 and talk of a past suicide attempt and pregnancy loss.
Sensitive topics
- Suicide
- Overdose
- Domestic abuse
Worth talking about
Kate and Hal are skilled at their jobs and struggle in their marriage. Talk about whether ambition and honesty can coexist, and when keeping secrets for a 'greater good' crosses a line.
