The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist: parents' guide

7+our pick

Best for ages 7 and up. Rated TV-Y.

A short, spooky-silly Halloween prequel to The Bad Guys that works for kids who already know the gang. In about 24 minutes, Mr. Wolf leads his crew of animal thieves into a haunted mansion to steal a cursed amulet, and the pranks and counter-pranks pile up. Expect a self-playing piano, floating chairs, ghosts, a nightmare and a suit of armor swinging an axe, most of it revealed as pranks. Language is limited to 'heck' and 'freaking.' The gang steals and lies without consequences, which is worth a word. Age 7 reflects the creepy atmosphere.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Slapstick only: one character kicks four others into the air, a possessed suit of armor charges and swings an axe without hitting anyone, a chandelier pins the armor, and the gang piles on Wolf off screen.

Language

Mild

Mild substitutes and insults only: 'heck,' 'freaking,' 'twerp,' 'stupid' and 'duh,' plus flatulence jokes. No actual swear words.

Sex and nudity

None

No romance or sexual content.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, smoking or drug content.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Spooky throughout but not intense: a piano plays itself, chairs float, ghosts appear, and Wolf has a nightmare about the mansion's villain. One prank makes Wolf believe his friends were lost because of him. Every scare turns out to be a trick.

Worth talking about

The gang breaks in, steals and pranks each other without ever facing consequences. Ask your kids where a joke stops being funny and starts being mean.
