Street Fighter: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for violence/action, bloody images, strong language, sexual references, partial nudity and brief smoking.
A loud, joke-heavy video game adaptation best suited to teens who already know the characters. The fights are near constant and mostly stylized, but some turn bloody, the animated flashbacks are gorier than the live action, and several characters are killed by supernatural blows. The PG-13 also covers at least one f-word and around ten s-words, frequent crude sexual jokes, a comic bare-bottom moment, a woman seen from behind as she undresses for a shower, and a hero who gets drunk and passes out at a party. That mix of innuendo, drinking and bloody brawling is why we say 13.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateNear-constant martial arts brawls with bloody lips, a broken arm and someone thrown into a burning fireplace. Chun-Li presses her palm onto a red-hot brand, and several characters die when supernatural strikes pierce their chests or turn them to ash.
Language
ModerateAt least one f-word (one guide reports more than one) and about ten s-words, plus "goddamn," "bitch," "bastard," "ass" and "damn." God's name is misused several times, and there is a middle-finger gesture.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrequent crude innuendo, including oral-sex jokes and an implied erection gag. Two men fight in a sauna as towels fall, showing a bare backside, and a woman's back and upper buttocks are seen before a shower. Skimpy outfits throughout.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateKen is a party animal who drinks heavily, gets drunk and passes out; other fighters drink beer, whiskey and mixed drinks at a club. There is brief smoking, which one guide says involves teens. No drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe villain drains captured fighters through tubes, the demonic Akuma and a corrupted Ryu with glowing red eyes may unsettle younger kids, and there are on-screen deaths, though they are quick and fantastical.
Worth talking about
Much of Ryu and Ken's feud comes from never talking honestly. Ask what it would have taken to clear the air sooner, and whether Chun-Li is after justice or revenge.
