Spider-Man: Brand New Day: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of action/violence and some language.
A big Marvel superhero adventure that fits most tweens and teens who've seen the earlier Spider-Man films. Peter Parker, now forgotten by everyone he loved, takes on the Hulk, the Punisher, ninja assassins and a mind controller. Fights are frequent and large-scale, with bloody cuts and bruises, a sniper shooting and people forced to leap from rooftops, though no on-screen deaths are reported. Language is the main step up: about 15 s-words, a cut-off 'motherf' and frequent use of God's name. Kissing and a hot-tub invitation keep romance mild. Good for about 12 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateLong fights with explosions, a tank rampage and the Hulk. Spider-Man is nearly impaled, shot in the back by a sniper and left bloody. A prisoner is strapped to a chair and tortured, a mind controller forces people into traffic and off rooftops, and a man is shot and bleeds on the ground.
Language
ModerateAbout 15 s-words by one count, plus 'ass,' 'asshole,' 'hell' and 'damn,' and frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names. The Punisher starts to say 'motherf' before being cut off.
Sex and nudity
MildKissing, including a kiss under mind control. Yelena, apparently nude in a hot pool with only her shoulders shown, tells Spider-Man to undress and join her, and he ends up in his underwear. A suggestive gag about how he makes his web fluid.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults drink beer and other drinks at a party, and a friend jokes that his energy drinks are 'addictive.' Several people are knocked out by drugged darts.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateIntense battles and peril, mind control that turns people against one another, and Peter suffering blackouts, convulsions and violent rage, which could unsettle younger kids. No gore.
Worth talking about
Peter keeps doing the right thing even when no one remembers him or gives him credit. Talk about why integrity matters when nobody is watching.
