Squid Game: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A violent, gripping South Korean thriller for older teens and adults, despite its childhood-game premise and candy-colored sets. Hundreds of people buried in debt compete in deadly versions of children's games for a huge cash prize across three seasons. Mass shootings of players, brutal fights, organ harvesting and several suicides are shown with plenty of blood. Expect frequent strong language in the English subtitles and dub, a brief sex scene, some nudity, a rich spectator trying to force a sex act on a guard, heavy smoking and drinking, and a drug storyline. Age 16 reflects the sustained graphic violence and despairing tone.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic: hundreds of players are shot in sprays of blood, others are beaten, stabbed or pushed to their deaths, and organs are cut out. Men beat women, a VIP gropes a guard and tries to force a sex act, and a newborn is endangered.
Language
StrongHeavy in the English subtitles and dub. One count found 8 f-words in the season 2 opener and 15 in season 3's, with many s-words, the c-word once, "bitch," "bastard" and misuse of God's name.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTwo players have sex in a restroom stall, clothed but with movement and sounds. A man is seen nude from behind, nearly nude body-painted people pose as VIP decor in season 1, and a VIP tries to force a guard into a sex act.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongCharacters smoke heavily and drink hard liquor, and gambling addiction lies behind many players' debts. In season 2 a player secretly takes smuggled pills that fuel violent, erratic behavior with tragic results, and drugs are hidden in a cross necklace.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained dread: every game ends in mass death. Characters die by suicide, a mother stabs her grown son, a new mother falls to her death, the hero's mother dies while he is away, and a player recounts her father abusing her and killing her mother.
