Invincible (2021): parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

An animated superhero drama that looks like a Saturday-morning cartoon but plays like a horror film, so it belongs with older teens and adults. The story of a teen inheriting his father's powers is smart and emotional, yet the violence is shockingly gory: crushed skulls, spilled organs, slaughtered civilians and a father beating his son nearly to death. Frequent f-words and s-words, implied sex between young adults, drinking, suicidal thoughts and villains who take their own lives add to it, and season 4 includes an abortion. The cartoon look draws younger kids in; age 16 because the gore is relentless across every season.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Very gory and frequent: heads crushed or twisted off, eyes popped out, bodies skewered and torn apart with visible guts. Civilians are slaughtered, a man's powers accidentally kill his family including his young son, and a father nearly beats his teenage son to death.

Language

Strong

Frequent profanity throughout, including f-words, s-words and "motherf---er," heavy use of God and Jesus as exclamations, and a middle-finger gesture. Plugged In counted four f-words in one season 1 episode and 11 in the season 3 premiere.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Make-out scenes and implied sex between 18-year-olds and young adults, underwear, implied nudity under sheets and implied masturbation. Brief nonsexual nudity includes a man's bare rear, plus penis-size jokes. In season 4 a young woman tells her boyfriend she had an abortion.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults and college students drink, sometimes heavily; the hero's mother downs most of a bottle of wine and later appears to lean on alcohol before seeking help. Some cigarette smoking and talk of cocaine and the drug trade.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained, disturbing horror: zombies, a possessing creature, a skin-melting substance, decomposing corpses and jump scares. Suicidal thoughts are voiced and villains die by suicide, one by leaping onto a sharp sundial. Some episodes have flashing lights.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Death of a child
  • Death of a parent
