Sex Education: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A funny, warm and extremely explicit British comedy about teens and sex, for older teens and parents comfortable with very frank content. Awkward Otis, whose mother is a sex therapist, runs an underground sex-advice clinic at his school. Expect graphic sex scenes with movement and sound, frequent full nudity including genitals, heavy profanity, teen drinking and pot smoking. Storylines include a sexual assault on a bus, self-harm, an abortion, homophobic bullying, an abusive boyfriend and a parent's fatal overdose. It handles consent, identity and relationships thoughtfully, but the explicitness puts it at 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongMostly bullying, shoves, slaps and a homophobic attack on a gay teen. Sexual violence: a man on a bus masturbates on a girl, and her trauma plays out over later seasons. A boyfriend assaults his girlfriend, and a flashback shows a girl abused at 12.
Language
StrongHeavy profanity: one count of the first episode found about a dozen each of f-words and s-words, plus "piss," crude anatomical terms, the insult "slag" and an anti-gay slur.
Sex and nudity
StrongVery explicit: teens and adults have graphic sex with movement and noise, and men and women are shown fully nude, including genitals. Masturbation, pornography, sex toys and blunt sexual talk run through nearly every episode.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongUnderage drinking and smoking are casual and frequent, and teens smoke marijuana, once with a friend's mother. A teen takes Viagra. A main character's mother struggles with drug addiction, relapses and dies of an overdose in the final season.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateNot scary, but heavy at times: panic attacks, the lasting trauma of the bus assault, a teen reporting her own mother to social services, and a parent's overdose and funeral.
