Scavengers Reign: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A gorgeous but brutal animated survival story for older teens and adults, not a cartoon for kids. Crew members stranded on a lush alien planet face storms, parasites and creatures that can take over their minds. The hand-drawn style hides graphic body horror, gruesome deaths and gutted animal carcasses, and the swearing grows stronger as the single season goes on. A brief scene shows bare breasts and buttocks after sex, and one man grows dependent on a hallucination-inducing substance to cope with grief. Common Sense Media suggests 16, which fits.
What's in it
Violence
StrongWildlife attacks, crushing storms and parasites cause gruesome, bloody injuries and deaths. Mind-controlled people turn on others, a man tears a parasite out of his own body, a mauled man is killed to end his pain, and animal carcasses spill their guts.
Language
StrongRepeated f-words and s-words, plus 'damn,' 'hell' and 'Jesus' as an exclamation. Common Sense Media notes the cursing picks up in the second half of the season.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTwo adults are shown naked in bed after implied sex, with quick glimpses of bare breasts and buttocks as they get up. Otherwise there is passionate kissing and talk about a strained marriage.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongTwo adults briefly drink champagne. More notably, a man repeatedly eats a black substance from a creature that makes him see his dead partner, and keeps using it to numb his grief, a clear echo of addiction.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongUnsettling creature designs, eerie sounds and the constant threat of being controlled or eaten keep tension high. Characters die alone or slowly, and guilt over lost loved ones hangs over nearly everyone.

- Self-harm
Worth talking about
The planet is beautiful and deadly at the same time. Talk about how each survivor's choices, kind or selfish, change what happens to the people around them.
