Hilda: parents' guide
Best for ages 7 and up. Rated TV-Y7.
A gentle, beautifully drawn fantasy adventure that suits families with kids about 7 and up. Blue-haired Hilda explores the city of Trolberg and the wilderness around it, befriending trolls, giants, elves and spirits, and the stories reward curiosity, kindness and seeing past differences. There is no profanity, romance or drinking. Scariness is the thing to watch, and it grows in seasons 2 and 3: a spell and a spirit possession, a ghost ship, a monster that eats naughty children, a giant creature that swallows Hilda and her mom, and one startling moment when a boy's head is cut off and later put back. Witchcraft and folklore magic run throughout.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly peril, such as tumbles off cliffs and down mountainsides and chases by creatures, and nobody is badly hurt. One season 2 episode has a jolting moment when David's head is cut off in an enchanted Viking battle and later reattached.
Language
NoneReviewers report no profanity or crude language in any of the three seasons; the dialogue is clean throughout.
Sex and nudity
NoneNo romance or sexual content; the relationships are friendships and Hilda's close bond with her mother.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNo drinking, smoking or drug use is shown or noted by reviewers in any season.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateLots of odd creatures and spells: a nightmare spirit torments David, a spell leaves Hilda's mom and David growling with glowing eyes, a Viking spirit possesses David, a ghost ship seeks crew, a child-eating monster visits, and a creature swallows Hilda and her mom.
Worth talking about
Hilda keeps discovering that the creatures everyone fears are simply misunderstood. Talk about a time a first impression of someone turned out to be wrong.
