High School Musical: parents' guide
Best for ages 5 and up. Rated TV-G.
A squeaky-clean TV musical about a basketball star and a shy brainiac who try out for the school play, easy viewing for the whole family. There is no violence, swearing or drinking, and the romance stops at flirting, a kiss on the cheek and an almost-kiss. The mild problems are social: a snobby drama queen schemes to keep the newcomers out of the show, teammates pressure the hero to stick to sports, and students rig a lab experiment to disrupt the school. Fine from about age 5, though the story will land best with kids 7 and up.
What's in it
Violence
NoneNo violence. The nearest thing is a girl shrieking after food is spilled on her and some scheming to sabotage a rival's audition.
Language
NoneNo profanity. A song lyric mentions a "booty" and characters trade mild put-downs like "stupid."
Sex and nudity
NoneOnly flirting, a kiss on the cheek and a final kiss that gets interrupted. A boy is briefly shirtless in a locker room.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNo drinking, smoking or drug use, and none is mentioned.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing scary. The only tension comes from auditions, a big game and a misunderstanding between friends.
Worth talking about
Troy's teammates pressure him to stick to basketball and skip the musical. Have you ever been talked out of trying something because of what others expected of you?
