Halloween Baking Championship: parents' guide
Best for ages 6 and up. Rated TV-PG.
A cheerful Food Network baking contest that most families can enjoy together, best for kids about 6 and up who don't mind fake gore. Bakers compete in Halloween-themed rounds, one goes home each episode until the finale, and the winner takes $25,000. Nobody is ever in danger, and the tone stays playful, with costumed judges and spooky themed sets. The desserts are what to know about: cakes made to look like severed limbs, bleeding hearts, open wounds and bloody doughnuts are typical. Some challenges use rum or other spirits as ingredients. Early seasons are rated TV-G; recent ones carry TV-PG, and season 11 was flagged for mild coarse language.
What's in it
Violence
MildNo real violence. The gore is all edible: cakes shaped like severed limbs, open wounds, bleeding hearts, shrunken heads and dissected creatures, sometimes realistic enough to gross out young kids.
Language
MildNo profanity is reported for the early TV-G seasons. Recent seasons are rated TV-PG, and Australia's classifier cited mild coarse language in season 11, so an occasional mild curse may turn up amid talk of flavor and presentation.
Sex and nudity
NoneNo romantic or sexual content; contestants, host and judges interact as colleagues and friendly competitors.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAlcohol appears only as an ingredient: one season has bakers build desserts around a randomly drawn bottle of spirits, another requires rum in a cake, and a later round calls for boozy eclairs.
Scary or intense scenes
MildHaunted-house sets, costumes and horror-movie themes (a summer-camp killer, the bloody prom scene from Carrie) add mild spookiness, but nobody is in danger and the mood stays light.
