Euphoria: parents' guide

18+our pick

Best for ages 18 and up. Rated TV-MA.

An adults-only drama about teenagers, with some of the most explicit content on television; most families will want to wait until 18. It follows Rue, a teen addict, and her classmates through drugs, sex, violence and trauma, and its third season jumps ahead to adult crime. Expect graphic sex, frequent full-frontal nudity, heavy drug use and overdoses, constant f-words, sexual exploitation of minors by adults, an abusive teen relationship, a young teen killed in a police shootout, self-harm, a suicide and a pet killed. The show takes addiction seriously, but its glossy style can make dangerous behavior look appealing.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Brutal: a 12-year-old kills a man with a hammer, a teen is beaten unconscious, a boy chokes his girlfriend, and a young teen dies in a police shootout. Sexual violence: an adult has sex with a high school girl, and girls are groped and coerced.

Language

Strong

Constant strong profanity: one count found close to 70 f-words in the first episode alone, plus s-words, the c-word, slurs including one for people with intellectual disabilities, and the n-word in song lyrics.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Explicit sex scenes, many with high school characters, and frequent full-frontal nudity, including a locker room scene. Porn clips, a teen's sex video shared without consent, a man masturbating on video with a teen, and in season 3, OnlyFans work, topless dancing and BDSM.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Central to the show: Rue uses opioids, pills and cocaine, relapses repeatedly and goes through withdrawal. Teens drink, smoke pot and buy alcohol with fake IDs, a child sells drugs, and season 3 shows fentanyl smuggling and fatal overdoses.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Disturbing: overdoses, a character found foaming at the mouth, panic attacks, withdrawal, a teen girl slashing her own forearm, and Rue grieving her father. Season 3 adds a suicide by hanging, a pet cockatoo poisoned, a chicken beheaded in close-up and deaths of major characters.
