The Boys: parents' guide

18+our pick

Best for ages 18 and up. Rated TV-MA.

Strictly for adults: a savage satire of celebrity superheroes that piles on gore, explicit sex and nonstop profanity. Heads explode, bodies are torn apart and civilians die by the dozen, often played for dark laughs. Graphic sex scenes, full-frontal male nudity, bizarre sexual gags and sexual assault recur, along with hard drug use, a fatal overdose, suicide and harm to children. The season premieres alone carry dozens of f-words each, plus c-words and slurs. Even older teens who love superheroes are better off waiting; the show is built to shock and stays that way through all five seasons.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Constant gore: exploding heads, dismemberment and a racist supe slaughtering minority civilians. A mother and baby die in a bloody birth, children are held at gunpoint, and sexual assault recurs, including coerced oral sex and the lead villain's rape of a woman.

Language

Strong

Constant and extreme. Plugged In counted roughly 40 to 80 f-words in each season premiere it tallied, plus many s-words, several c-words and crude sexual terms. The N-word and a slur against a Japanese character are used.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Frequent explicit sex, including oral and group sex and masturbation, with bare breasts and buttocks and full-frontal male nudity. Gags include a shrunken man having sex with a doll, an octopus lover and a supe's tentacle-like penis.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Cocaine and heroin are snorted, smoked and injected, a superpower drug fuels addiction, and a character dies after being forcibly injected with heroin. Another nearly dies after accidentally swallowing cocaine. Heavy drinking, drunkenness and smoking are routine.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Disturbing images throughout: torture, body horror, a young woman obliterated by a speeding hero in the first episode, a rescued dolphin crushed by a truck, and a psychopathic lead who kills casually and threatens children. A boy accidentally kills his mother with his powers.

Worth talking about

The show argues that fame, money and power corrupt the people we're told to admire. Which public figures do you trust, and how would you know if that trust was misplaced?
