Unbelievable: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A powerful, carefully made true-crime drama for mature teens and adults about a serial rapist and the people his crimes affect. A young woman who grew up in foster care reports being raped, is pressured by police into saying she lied, and is charged; years later, two detectives in another state link similar attacks. The assaults appear in short flashbacks from the victims' point of view without explicit nudity, and medical exams are shown in clinical detail. She considers suicide, and in one episode she drinks and smokes marijuana. Swearing is limited. We suggest 17 because the rapes, though never graphic, are shown repeatedly.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Sexual violence: several rapes are shown in brief flashbacks, including a masked attacker who ties up and blindfolds his victim and threatens her with a knife. Rape kits, bruise photos and invasive exams are shown. Not exploitative, but disturbing.

Language

Moderate

Infrequent. A handful of f-words across the series, plus 'ass,' 'piss,' misuse of God's and Jesus' names, and frank clinical terms for body parts during interviews.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Sexual content centers on the assaults (see violence). A woman's bare back and backside are seen during an exam, a man is shown fully nude in a strip search, and there is frequent clinical talk about rape.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Brief. In one episode Marie, who is on probation, drinks and smokes marijuana, then misses her curfew and is removed from her housing program. Otherwise adults drink wine now and then, once to calm a friend after a terrible experience.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

The attacks are terrifying, and survivors' fear and trauma linger on screen. The main character's isolation after no one believes her is crushing, and at one point she climbs over a bridge railing, considering suicide.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Suicide

Worth talking about

Marie's story shows how disbelief can harm survivors. Why do the two detectives succeed where the first officers failed, and how should we respond when someone says they were assaulted?
