Bridgerton: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A lavish, soapy Regency romance for older teens and adults, and far steamier than the costumes suggest. Season 1 has many long sex scenes with bare breasts and buttocks, and later seasons have fewer but add a threesome and on-screen masturbation. One first-season scene, where a wife stops her husband from withdrawing during sex, has been widely criticized as rape, the first episode has an attempted rape, and season 4 has men cornering a maid. Expect occasional f-words, drinking and smoking, boxing and a duel, the sudden deaths of a father and a young husband, and an unplanned pregnancy plot. Best kept for 17 and up.
What's in it
Violence
StrongSexual violence: a man tries to rape a young woman in episode 1, a wife holds her husband down during sex so he cannot withdraw, and in season 4 men menace a maid until a fistfight breaks out. Also bare-knuckle boxing, slaps and a duel.
Language
ModerateStrong words are occasional: some f-words, mostly in season 1, plus bitch, ass, damn and bloody hell, and insults that shame women as loose or ruined. Seasons 3 and 4 are much milder.
Sex and nudity
StrongMany long sex scenes, especially in season 1, with bare breasts and buttocks but genitals covered. Oral sex is implied, season 3 adds a threesome and paid sex workers, and season 4 shows a woman masturbating and male rear nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink at balls and clubs and sometimes get sloppy or aggressive. Cigarettes, cigars, pipes and snuff appear, and an herbal tea with euphoric effects hints at drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA father dies suddenly of an allergic reaction, a young husband dies in his sleep in season 4, a lord is murdered by bookmakers he cheated, and a pregnant young woman tries to end her pregnancy and is found unconscious. Mostly melodrama, not fright.

Worth talking about
Daphne enters marriage knowing almost nothing about sex, and one of her choices crosses a line with Simon. How does the show handle consent, and does it treat that scene seriously enough?
