Normal People: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A tender, intimate drama about first love that is best for older teens, given how much of it is sex scenes. Connell and Marianne begin a secret relationship in their last year of school in a small Irish town and keep drifting together and apart through university. The many sex scenes show bare breasts and backsides, though not genitals, and model consent and condom use. The series also depicts Marianne being groped against her will at a nightclub, abuse by her brother, bullying, rough sexual relationships, depression and a friend's suicide. Frequent f-words and heavy student drinking round it out, which is why we suggest 17.
