Young Sheldon: parents' guide
Best for ages 11 and up. Rated TV-PG.
A gentle family sitcom that many tweens can enjoy with a parent, though it grows more grown-up in later seasons. Nine-year-old genius Sheldon starts high school in 1980s Texas while his football-coach dad, devout mom, siblings and hard-living Meemaw cope. Language is mild, adults drink and smoke, and Sheldon is often threatened by bullies. Later seasons add a teen's relationship with a much older woman that leads to a pregnancy, and the final season centers on the sudden death of Sheldon's father and the family's grief. Age 11 reflects that loss and the later sexual storylines.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly verbal: threats from bullies and siblings, a mother vowing to beat up a rude churchgoer, and food thrown at dinner. Sheldon's dad punches a man offscreen and comes back with bloody knuckles.
Language
MildMild words such as hell, damn, ass, bastard and son of a bitch, the last said by a child at the dinner table. Insults like shut up and doofus are common; no s-words or f-words.
Sex and nudity
ModerateEarly seasons stop at crushes and a teen's hidden girlie magazines. Later, a 17-year-old dates a 29-year-old woman who becomes pregnant, the couple pull over to have sex offscreen, Meemaw sleeps with her boyfriend, and Sheldon's father nearly has an affair with a neighbor.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSheldon's dad often has a beer, and Meemaw drinks and smokes constantly. Teens smoke behind a shed, and in the final season Sheldon's sister throws a party with beer, shows up hungover at church and tries a cigarette. Drugs come up only in passing.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateNothing scary, but the final season turns on the sudden offscreen death of Sheldon's father from a heart attack, followed by a funeral and heavy grief. Earlier seasons include his milder heart attack and a tornado.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Sheldon is brilliant but often dismissive of people he sees as less smart; ask how his family shows love for him even when he is hard to live with.
