The Princess Switch: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated TV-G.

A light, predictable royal romance in the style of The Parent Trap, fine for kids and anyone who likes sweet holiday comedies. A Chicago baker discovers she is the double of a duchess about to marry a prince, and the two swap places for a few days before Christmas. Content is mild: kissing and flirting, a brief remark about winning a contest by sleeping with a judge, God's name misused twice, and adults drinking champagne. The plot depends on lying, and a rival sabotages a baking contest. The duchess mentions that her parents died when she was young.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Mild mishaps only. A man falls from a balcony into soft snow unhurt, a woman tumbles off a horse, a car nearly hits someone, and a rival spills coffee on the heroine and cuts her mixer cord.

Language

Mild

God's name is misused twice, and someone says a thing would 'p-ss you off.' Otherwise there are only put-downs such as 'imbecile' and 'shut it.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

Couples kiss, flirt, and slow dance, a woman admires a shirtless man, and one woman makes a brief comment about sleeping with a judge to win a competition. A child teases her dad about his crush.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink wine and champagne in one scene. There is no drunkenness, smoking, or drug content in the film.

Scary or intense scenes

None

Nothing scary. The duchess mentions that her parents died when she was a girl, and a single father's wife has left the family, but neither is dwelt on.

Worth talking about

The switch only works because both women lie to people they care about; ask kids when keeping a secret turns into deceiving someone.
