The Christmas Chronicles: parents' guide

8+our pick

Best for ages 8 and up. Rated PG for mild action/violence and brief language.

A fast, funny Santa adventure that works for most kids from about 8 with a parent, though it carries more grief and rule-breaking than a typical holiday film. Two siblings face their first Christmas since their firefighter dad died, and the older brother's anger shows up as shoving his sister and helping friends steal a car. Santa crashes his sleigh, lands in jail and leads them through a chase-filled night. The elf battles are cartoonish, but a scene where crooks grab the boy and threaten him is tense. Language and innuendo stay mild, and the film handles the family's loss with care.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Mostly cartoonish: elves punch and kick crooks, one waves a chainsaw for laughs, and a bartender threatens Santa with a bat. A boy throws a shoe at his sister's head, and crooks grab him and threaten to toss him into a fire.

Language

Mild

Mild: 'hell,' 'damn,' 'dammit' and 'crap,' a girl who stops just short of an s-word, a few misuses of God's name, and insults such as 'moron' and 'big fat slob.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

A married couple kisses. In a jailhouse musical number, women in short skirts and low-cut tops flirt with Santa, and the song carries some mild innuendo. No nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Santa and the kids pass through an Irish pub where adults drink and one patron has passed out in the background. The sister accuses her teen brother of drinking with friends, and there is a 'Christmas beer' joke.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The girl tumbles out of the sleigh and plummets toward the ground, a sleigh crash knocks everyone out, and the CGI elves can look creepy. Scenes of the family missing their father are genuinely sad.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Teddy turns his grief into anger at everyone around him; talk about healthier ways to handle sadness after losing someone you love.
