High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: parents' guide
Best for ages 9 and up. Rated TV-PG.
A bright, earnest musical dramedy that suits most tweens and works well as a family watch. Students at East High, home of the original movies, stage a show each year while juggling crushes, jealousy and friendships across four seasons. Romance means kissing and talk of being in love, including a gay teen couple. Language is mild, with one bleeped curse used as a joke, and there is no drinking or drug use. Some kids deal with separating parents. Age 9 reflects the teen-romance focus and a few jump scares rather than anything objectionable.
What's in it
Violence
NoneNo real violence. Arguments end with characters storming off, a camper breaks a picture frame with a football, a girl fakes being electrocuted as a prank, and another mentions knocking out some of her teeth.
Language
MildOccasional crap, hell and damn, frequent use of God's name, and one bleeped s-word used for comedy. A character says she's screwed.
Sex and nudity
MildKissing, hand-holding, flirting and talk of being in love, including two boys kissing in season 4. Some outfits are revealing, and a dad reminds his son to practice safe sex.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNone. A New Year's Eve party is pointedly alcohol-free, and nobody smokes or uses drugs.
Scary or intense scenes
MildA Halloween episode stages a zombie dance number in the school with a few jump scares. Otherwise the stress comes from rivalries, breakups and parents who separate.
Worth talking about
Characters compete for roles and sometimes sabotage each other; ask how someone can handle jealousy and still cheer on a friend's success.
