The Penguin: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A brutal, profane gangster drama set in the Batman universe, made for adults rather than comic-book fans looking for superhero fun. Oz Cobb claws his way up Gotham's underworld through murder, betrayal and a drug trade, and the camera rarely looks away: point-blank shootings, torture with a wire garrote, people strangled and burned. A mother and her teenage son are killed, and a flashback shows two young boys drowning. Swearing is relentless, sex is implied with brief nudity, and drugs and addiction drive the plot. We suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Constant and bloody: point-blank shootings to the head, stabbings and strangling, a man tortured with a garrote wire while tied to a chair, a heart torn from a chest, a household gassed, and a mother and son killed by fire.

Language

Strong

Relentless. Plugged In counted nearly 40 f-words and more than 15 s-words in the first episode alone, plus 'bitch,' 'prick,' crude words for genitals and frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Sex is implied between Oz and his girlfriend, and characters make out. A woman flashes her breast, a man is stripped naked and tied to a chair with nothing explicit shown, and sex workers talk about kink.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

The story revolves around making and selling a street drug taken as eye drops, then a more addictive new one. Users and addicts appear, a man with a drinking problem is pushed into drinking and drugs, and drinking is constant.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained menace and cruelty: torture scenes, an elderly mother held captive and tormented, electroshock treatment in Arkham flashbacks, a girl finding her mother hanged, and sudden shocking killings. A flashback of children trapped in a flooding tunnel is haunting.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
  • Death of a parent
  • Addiction

Worth talking about

Oz says everything he does is for his mother and his crew, yet he betrays almost everyone. What does the show suggest about people who use loyalty to excuse cruelty?
