The Notebook: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated PG-13 for some sexuality.

A sweeping, tearjerking romance that suits teens ready for a fairly steamy love story. In 1940s South Carolina, a working-class young man and a wealthy girl fall hard for each other one summer, are pulled apart by her parents and the war, and reconnect years later while she is engaged to someone else. A framing story set in a nursing home deals with dementia and old age. The main concern is sex: two lovemaking scenes with brief partial nudity, one of them during an affair, plus another implied encounter. Violence and language are mild. Age 14 reflects the sexual content and the sad ending.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Brief, toned-down World War II combat in which a close friend dies, and wounded soldiers missing limbs. In heated arguments the heroine repeatedly slaps and shoves her boyfriend. Risky stunts include dangling from a Ferris wheel and lying in a road at night.

Language

Mild

Mild and infrequent: about a dozen words such as 'ass,' 'damn' and 'hell,' 'son of a bitch,' a few uses of 'goddamn,' and other misuse of God's name. An old movie in a theater scene includes a dated slur. No f-words reported.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

The teen couple undress and start making love before being interrupted. Years later, an affair while she is engaged shows bare backs, buttocks and a brief side view of a breast. He sleeps with a widow, seen nude from behind, and army recruits stand nude.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Noah goes on a ten-day drinking binge after seeing Allie with her fiancé, and she and the fiancé get tipsy on champagne. Adults drink and smoke at parties and meals, and a 17-year-old smokes a cigar.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

No scares, but heavy emotion: a friend dies in the war, an elderly woman with dementia cannot recognize her husband and has a frightening episode of confusion, and the ending deals with death at the close of a long life.

Worth talking about

Noah gets his first date by hanging from a Ferris wheel until Allie says yes, and the couple fight physically. Ask your teen which parts of this romance look like real love and which would be red flags in real life.
