The Descent: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong violence/gore and language.
A brutal, claustrophobic horror film for mature viewers, about six women whose caving trip goes wrong when they are trapped underground and hunted by flesh-eating creatures. The violence is graphic: throats torn out, skulls pierced by pickaxes, a mercy killing and deadly violence between the friends. Language is heavy, with 30 to 40 f-words depending on the count, and two of the women smoke a joint. The film opens with a car crash that kills a husband and young daughter, and grief haunts the main character throughout. The gore, sustained terror and strong language are why we suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic gore throughout: creatures bite off heads, tear out throats and rip open bodies, and pickaxes go through skulls. The women also hurt each other, including an accidental neck stabbing and a deliberate killing. The opening crash impales a man on metal pipes.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted about 40 f-words, some sexual, and nearly 20 s-words; Movieguide counted about 30 f-words. Also about six exclamations of 'Jesus,' other misuses of God's name and crude slang for body parts. The swearing escalates as things get worse.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex scenes. An affair between one woman and another's husband is implied, there is a garbled joke about orgasms, and the naked creatures briefly show breasts in dim, gory shots.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongThe women drink beer, some heavily, at a cabin the night before the climb. Plugged In and Movieguide both report two of them briefly smoking a joint; Common Sense mentions cigarettes.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongRelentless: tight crawl spaces, total darkness, a cave-in, frequent jump scares and pale, blind creatures feeding on bodies. The opening crash and the mother's grief-stricken visions of her lost daughter are also hard to watch.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a child
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Secrets and panicked choices put the whole group at risk long before the creatures appear. How does the film show trust breaking down when people are afraid?
