American Horror Story: parents' guide

18+our pick

Best for ages 18 and up. Rated TV-MA.

An adults-only horror anthology; each season tells a new story, and almost all of them push hard on shock value. Across thirteen seasons expect graphic gore and torture, several rape scenes (including a supernatural assault and a gang rape), frequent sex scenes with fetish and orgy content, heroin and cocaine use, a school shooting, suicide and self-harm. Some seasons, like Coven, are campier than others, but none is suitable for younger teens, and the repeated sexual violence alone puts it at 18.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Bloody in every season: stabbings, decapitation, amputation, cannibalism, torture and medical experiments, plus a school shooting in season 1. Sexual violence recurs, including a rape by a costumed figure in season 1, a gang rape in Coven and a brutal assault in Hotel.

Language

Strong

Early seasons lean on s-words and crude terms such as 'c--ksucker' and 'p---y,' plus slurs. From Cult (season 7) on, f-words are common: Plugged In counted nine in one Apocalypse episode and seven, plus a c-word, in a Delicate episode.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Frequent sex scenes, often violent or fetishistic, with nudity that is mostly partial, such as bare buttocks. Content includes masturbation, bondage, orgies, and storylines involving incest and necrophilia. Teen characters have sex, sometimes with adults.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Teens and adults drink and smoke. Cocaine, heroin and marijuana are used on screen, Hotel features addicts as major characters, and season 1 includes a teen's overdose on pills.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Built to disturb: ghosts, demons, killer clowns, a cannibal family, an asylum, witches and vampires, plus a late-term miscarriage described in detail and realistic dead animals. Every season has nightmare imagery.

Worth talking about

The show often turns real tragedies, like school shootings and historic murders, into spectacle. Talk about when horror sheds light on something and when it exploits it.
