The Walking Dead: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A long-running, intense survival drama for older teens with strong stomachs. Over 11 seasons, a group of survivors fights both the undead and other people, and the violence grows more brutal as human villains take over: torture, cannibals, and a notorious scene of two men's heads beaten in with a barbed-wire bat. Children are shot and killed, parents die in front of their kids, and several characters take their own lives. Sexual violence is threatened or implied more than once. Sex is brief, swearing is mostly s-words, and drug use and alcoholism come up now and then, but the sheer brutality is why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic gore: walkers eat people and animals, heads are stabbed and shot, and humans torture, behead and slaughter each other. Sexual violence: a villain forces a woman to strip and menaces her, men try to rape a boy, and captives are sexually exploited off screen.
Language
StrongFrequent unbleeped s-words plus bitch, pissed, damn and hell; f-words are rare to absent. In season 1 a racist character aims a racial slur at a Black survivor.
Sex and nudity
ModerateMost episodes have none, but a few show couples having sex briefly, without explicit nudity, and others imply it off screen. Affairs, pregnancy, birth control and a love triangle come up in the story.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongOccasional rather than constant: a drug-dealing survivor is shown using drugs in seasons 1 and 3, an alcoholic farmer relapses, another survivor's craving for liquor sets off a deadly walker attack, and a teenage girl gets drunk on moonshine. Some characters smoke.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongConstant tension, jump scares and decaying corpses, with major characters, including children, killed suddenly. A girl kills her younger sister, a boy must shoot his mother's body after she dies in childbirth, and two husbands abuse their families.

Worth talking about
The survivors keep asking whether they can stay decent people while doing whatever it takes to live. Which characters hold on to their humanity, and which lose it?
