Sweet Tooth: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A tender but often dark post-apocalyptic fairy tale for young teens who can handle loss. After a pandemic, a boy with deer antlers leaves the forest to find his mother, helped by a gruff protector, while armed groups hunt hybrid children like him. Expect gunfights, stabbings and on-screen deaths without much gore, hybrid kids caged and experimented on, and the deaths of several parent figures, the first in episode 1. Language includes s-words that grow more frequent in later seasons, and there is almost no sexual content. The warmth and humor make it work for many 13-year-olds watching with a parent.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFrequent but not gory: people are shot, stabbed, burned with a flamethrower and thrown from a roof, and characters die on screen. Hybrid children wear shock collars, are kept in a kennel, and one is killed to make a cure.
Language
ModerateSeveral s-words in some episodes, plus 'hell,' 'dammit,' 'a--hole,' 'numbnuts,' misuse of God's name and slurs aimed at hybrids. Profanity increases in later seasons. One guide also lists an f-word, which other detailed reviews don't report.
Sex and nudity
MildA couple kisses a few times, and the boy is seen from the shoulders up while bathing. No sexual situations.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink wine and at a bar, a community hoards liquor, and men smoke a pipe or cigar. The boy has a hallucinatory dream after breathing in flower pollen. No drunkenness or real drug use is noted.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateChildren are hunted, threatened with dissection and pulled from their parents, and early scenes show mass deaths from the virus and sobbing families. The boy loses his father figure in episode 1, and later seasons kill off other parent figures, bringing more grief.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Death of a child
Worth talking about
Frightened people blame and hunt the hybrid children for a disaster they didn't cause. Talk about how fear during a crisis can turn people against those who seem different.
