Solo Leveling: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A bloody monster-hunting power fantasy for older teens who like video-game-style action. The weakest hunter in a world of monster-filled dungeons nearly dies in a massacre, gains a mysterious leveling system, and becomes overwhelmingly strong. Violence is the main issue across both seasons: people are cut in half, dismembered and torn apart by monsters, and some human hunters torture and betray others. Dungeon scenes are tense and frightening. Language includes some s-words, and there is very little sexual content or drinking. Age 16 reflects the gore and terror rather than sex or language.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Heavy and graphic: monsters tear hunters apart, people are cut in half, beheaded and dismembered, the hero is impaled and loses a leg, and cruel hunters torture and kill rivals. Later battles with his shadow army are large and bloody.

Language

Moderate

Some s-words, about six in one count of the compilation film, plus "damn," "hell," "bastard" and "ass," and spoken threats of violence. Dub wording may differ.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Minimal. The hero is shown shirtless and exercising, nurses swoon over his looks, and one asks for his number after walking in while he changes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

The hero drinks a beer with a meal. No drunkenness, smoking or drug use is reported.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Dark dungeons full of screaming, panicking people, a temple of smiling statues that slaughter a trapped party, distorted faces in close-up, and a gruesome death that replays in flashbacks.

Worth talking about

Jinwoo's growing power changes how he treats people. Does strength make someone better, or just more able to do what they already wanted?
