Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for some graphic nudity, language throughout, sexual content and drug use.

A raunchy music-industry mockumentary from The Lonely Island, best for older teens and adults who already like that brand of humor. Pop star Conner4Real's solo career falls apart after he ditches his childhood band, and the jokes lean hard on sex, drugs and gross-out gags. Expect a long close-up of a man's genitals, bare breasts, sexual song lyrics, roughly 80 f-words, racial and anti-gay slurs, marijuana in many scenes, and his mother snorting cocaine at a party. Violence is mostly slapstick, apart from escaped wolves mauling a crowd. The graphic nudity and drug use are why we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Mostly slapstick: crashes on an ATV, a hoverboard and a golf cart, a fistfight, falls and crotch punches. Leashed wolves break loose at a proposal and maul guests, nearly killing a fellow singer. Song lyrics joke about killing Osama bin Laden.

Language

Strong

Near-constant. One count tallies about 80 f-words and 60 s-words, plus crude anatomical terms, the n-word three or four times, the r-word, and an anti-gay slur printed on jeans. Many song lyrics are profane too.

Sex and nudity

Strong

A lingering, graphic shot of a man's penis, which Conner autographs; a fan presses her bare breasts and buttocks against a car window. Conner is later seen naked onstage with his genitals tucked out of sight. A music video puts him in bed with ten scantily dressed women, and lyrics describe sex acts.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Drug use is shown: marijuana in many scenes, including bongs and a huge stash that leaves three friends very high, and his mother snorts cocaine during a wild party. He also gets drunk alone, and crack, Ecstasy and LSD come up in jokes.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Not scary. The wolf attack is chaotic but played for laughs. Conner's pet turtle dies and gets a mock-Viking funeral with a flaming arrow, also a gag. A public humiliation and a rift between friends carry mild emotional weight.

Sensitive topics

  • Animal death

Worth talking about

Conner surrounds himself with people who only tell him what he wants to hear. Why do honest friends matter more than an audience of fans?
