Ouija: Origin of Evil: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for disturbing images, terror and thematic elements.

A stylish, genuinely scary 1960s ghost story for teens who enjoy horror. A widowed mother who runs a fake seance business brings home a Ouija board, and her 9-year-old daughter is soon possessed. Blood is limited, swearing is mild and romance is a single kiss, but the scares are relentless and the story turns very dark: a teen boy is found hanged, and several characters die, including a parent and a child. We suggest 13 for the sustained terror and those deaths.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Mostly bloodless: a teen boy is shown hanging after a spirit drives him to it, a man breaks his neck in a fall, a woman is stabbed with a knife, a girl's lips are sewn shut off camera, and a girl writes in her own blood.

Language

Mild

Infrequent and mild: a few uses of "bitch," plus "hell," "crap" and "a--hole," and about half a dozen uses of "oh my God."

Sex and nudity

Mild

A teen girl sneaks a boy into her room and they share a tender kiss. Some flirting and a low-cut dress; no nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Teens drink from cups at a small party, and adults have wine at dinner. The girls' father is said to have been killed by a drunk driver.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Relentless jump scares, a little girl with clouded eyes and an unnaturally stretched mouth, darting shadow figures, a dark spirit clinging to her neck, and a backstory of wartime torture in the basement.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
  • Death of a child
  • Suicide

Worth talking about

The mother fakes contact with the dead to comfort grieving clients. Ask your teen whether a comforting lie can still do harm.
