Industry: parents' guide

18+our pick

Best for ages 18 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A cutthroat drama about young graduates at a London investment bank that is for adults only. Graphic sex scenes with full-frontal nudity, nonstop f-words and heavy cocaine, ketamine and alcohol use run through every season. Clients and colleagues sexually assault or harass several young staff, a young banker dies after overwork and stimulant use in the first episode, and later seasons add a woman shot dead, a drug-related death, a parent's drowning, a suicide attempt, a drug-fueled balcony fall and an underage escort. Almost everyone is manipulative and rarely punished. The sexual content, assaults and drug use put it at 18.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Sexual assault recurs: a female client gropes Harper and assaults another graduate, a powerful businessman tries to assault Yasmin at a party, and a later season includes an assault accusation. Otherwise a few fistfights, a woman shot dead, and a man bloodied after a balcony fall.

Language

Strong

Relentless. Plugged In counted more than 50 f-words, four s-words and two c-words in one season 3 episode, and harsh profanity is routine throughout, including during sex scenes.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Explicit and frequent: drawn-out sex scenes showing intercourse, oral sex and masturbation, some in close-up, plus full-frontal nudity and affairs used for career advantage. In season 4 a senior banker's escort turns out to be underage.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Drugs appear in nearly every episode: cocaine most of all, plus pills, ketamine, MDMA, LSD, psilocybin and, briefly, meth. One character is a heroin addict, others relapse, and a season 4 character dies after a cocaine, ketamine and alcohol binge.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Not scary, but emotionally harsh: a sudden death in the first episode, a woman found dead with a bloodied face, a parent who drowns while his daughter does not help, and a season 4 suicide attempt by a man haunted by his father's suicide.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Suicide
  • Addiction
  • Overdose
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The bank rewards people who cross every line. Ask your teen what these characters give up for money and status, and whether any of them seem happier for it.
