I'll Be Gone in the Dark: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A haunting true crime docuseries for older teens and adults, following writer Michelle McNamara's obsessive hunt for the Golden State Killer, who committed at least 13 murders and more than 50 rapes in California in the 1970s and 1980s. No attacks are shown, but survivors describe being assaulted in frank, explicit detail, and crime scene photos appear. The series also covers McNamara's sudden death from an accidental overdose linked to a hidden opioid addiction. Swearing is limited, but sexual terms are constant. The sustained focus on sexual violence is why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

No attacks are shown, but sexual assault and murder are the subject: survivors, including one who was 15 when she was attacked, give detailed accounts of being raped, and crime scene photos and archival footage include disturbing images.

Language

Moderate

Swearing is limited, with occasional f-words and "bitch" in archived police reports and audio. Clinical and sexual terms are used constantly to describe the attacks.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Sex is not depicted, but sexual topics fill the series: words like "penis" and "masturbate" come up regularly in accounts of the assaults.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

No drug use is shown, but the series reveals that McNamara secretly depended on opioid pills and explains how her accidental overdose happened.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained dread: survivors recount a masked man breaking in at night and tying them up, and whole neighborhoods lived in fear for years. The author's sudden death, leaving a young daughter, is deeply sad.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Addiction
  • Overdose
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Survivors describe the shame and silence they faced in the 1970s. Talk about how attitudes toward sexual assault survivors have changed, and how McNamara's obsession both helped the case and hurt her.
