Gilmore Girls: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A fast-talking, warm family dramedy about a young single mom and her bookish daughter that suits tweens and teens watching with a parent. Most episodes revolve around school, small-town quirks, dating and family friction, with mild swearing and plenty of cocktails among the adults. As Rory grows up, the show takes on underage drinking, implied sex including Rory sleeping with a married ex-boyfriend, and an arrest. One season 3 scene has a teen boyfriend pushing for sex after his girlfriend says no, which the show downplays. Age 13 reflects the romance, the drinking and that scene.
What's in it
Violence
StrongRated strong for one scene: in season 3, a teen boyfriend keeps pressing for sex at a party after his girlfriend refuses, and she has to push free; the show treats it as a misunderstanding. Her ex then fights him. Otherwise just arguments and a fire.
Language
MildMild and fairly frequent: "hell," "damn," "ass," "bitch" and "bastard," plus "retarded" used as an insult. No f-words or s-words are reported.
Sex and nudity
ModerateLots of kissing and dating, with sex implied and couples shown in bed. A teen loses her virginity to a married ex-boyfriend, implied rather than shown. Later a couple moves in together, and one scene is set in a strip club with no nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink cocktails and wine constantly. A teen gets drunk at a high school party, college-age characters drink at parties, and underage drinking is addressed. Characters smoke cigars and cigarettes, with occasional marijuana mentions.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing scary. Tense moments include a grandparent's health scare, painful breakups, family blowups and an arrest.
Sensitive topics
- Sexual assault
Worth talking about
Lorelai and Rory are unusually close, but Rory still keeps secrets and makes choices her mom disagrees with. What makes it easier or harder to be honest with a parent?
