Clueless: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sex related dialogue and some teen use of alcohol and drugs.
A witty, bubbly update of Jane Austen's Emma that suits young teens, with lots of talk about sex but nothing shown. Characters gossip about virginity and who is "doable," teens drink and smoke pot at a party, and a stoner classmate later goes into recovery. Cher is robbed at gunpoint, and a classmate forces a kiss on her in his car and then leaves her stranded; both moments pass quickly but are worth talking about. Language includes s-words and a slur for intellectual disability. Fine for most kids from 13 with a parent.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateCher is held up at gunpoint and made to lie on the ground, unhurt. A classmate forces a kiss on her in his car after she refuses, which she later calls sexual harassment. Boys dangle a girl over a balcony as a prank.
Language
ModerateSome s-words, "bitch," "asshole," "crap," "hell" and frequent "oh my God," plus slang like "boink-fest" and jokes about anatomy. A slur for people with intellectual disabilities is used several times, and gay characters are described in dated terms. No f-words reported.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo nudity or sex scenes, though some teen sex is implied and sex is a constant topic: virginity is mocked, a waiter is rated "doable" and girls trade tips on showing skin. The central romance pairs 16-year-old Cher with her college-age ex-stepbrother.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongTeens drink beer and wine and smoke joints at a party, and a drunk partygoer throws up in a pool. A stoner classmate later joins a 12-step program and gives away his bong. A Coke-versus-cocaine mix-up is played for laughs.
Scary or intense scenes
MildBrief peril: the gunpoint robbery and a panicked wrong turn onto the freeway. A student pretends he might jump from a classroom window and the teacher jokes about it. Otherwise very light.
Worth talking about
Cher means well but treats Tai like a makeover project. When does helping a friend turn into trying to control who they are?
