Modern Family: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated TV-PG.
A smart, warm mockumentary sitcom that families with tweens often watch together, with the caveat that sexual jokes are frequent. Three related households, including a gay couple raising an adopted daughter and an older man with a much younger wife, bicker and make up over 11 seasons. Expect innuendo, couples caught in suggestive moments, mild cursing, a running gag with a toddler saying a bleeped f-word, and teen drinking that gets punished. Two grandparents die in later seasons. Age 12 reflects the steady sexual humor rather than anything graphic.
What's in it
Violence
MildPlayed for laughs: slapstick, toy-gun shootouts, a shoving match in a flashback, and jokes about prison gangs and crime. A teen accidentally knocks over a police officer while resisting arrest.
Language
ModerateRegular mild cursing such as damn, hell, crap, bitch and bastard, and frequent use of God's name. A toddler says the f-word about seven times in one episode, bleeped, and the finale has another bleeped f-word. Some insensitive remarks are played for comedy.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrequent sexual innuendo, and married couples caught in suggestive moments, sometimes in underwear. A man hints at a threesome, a mother helps her teen get birth control, and a later season has an unplanned pregnancy. A teen's hospital gown falls open in one gag.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink wine, cocktails and Scotch, and one person gets drunk. A teen is arrested for underage drinking, a woman admits to eating a marijuana edible, and a character is loopy on opiates before surgery.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing frightening. Grief arrives late in the run, when Claire and Mitchell's mother dies in season 10 and Phil's father dies in season 11, both handled with warmth and humor.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
The show celebrates very different kinds of families; ask what makes each household work despite all the chaos.
