Friendship: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language and some drug content.
A painfully awkward, often surreal comedy for older teens and adults who enjoy cringe humor in the style of Tim Robinson's sketch work. A lonely suburban dad becomes fixated on his charismatic new neighbor, and when the friendship falls apart his behavior turns more and more unhinged. Swearing is constant, with more than 60 f-words. He licks a toad to get high, a dealer offers a menu of drugs, and there is plenty of smoking and drinking. A frank talk about orgasms and a hostage standoff with a stolen pistol also come up, though no one is killed. The language and the drug trip are why we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateMostly comic, but a stolen pistol is used to hold people at gunpoint with threats to kill, and a ricocheting bullet hits a man in the leg. A sparring match turns into real punches to the face, plus a workplace scuffle, a van crash, broken-glass cuts and frequent nosebleeds.
Language
StrongHeavy profanity: more than 60 f-words and nearly 20 s-words by one count, frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names, and words like 'a--hole,' 'd--khead,' 'c--k' and 'b--ch.'
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex scenes or nudity. A wife wonders aloud about never having another orgasm while her husband sits beside her, he offers her 'a lick' as a clumsy euphemism, and a porn magazine is mentioned.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongDrug use is shown: after failing to get ayahuasca, the main character licks a toad and has a psychedelic trip. A dealer offers ecstasy, weed, mushrooms and Adderall. Lots of smoking and drinking, someone gets drunk, and a child is offered a cigarette.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe discomfort is mostly social, built on humiliation and obsessive behavior that keeps escalating. A frantic search for someone lost in the city sewers and the gunpoint standoff are genuinely tense.
Worth talking about
Craig wants a friend so badly that he ignores every boundary. What makes a friendship healthy, and how should someone respond when a friend pulls away?
