Emily the Criminal: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for language, some violence and brief drug use.

A tense, gritty crime thriller for older teens and adults. Aubrey Plaza plays a woman buried in student debt and shut out of good jobs by an old assault conviction, who slides into a credit card fraud ring as the danger keeps escalating. Expect beatings, a stabbing, a box cutter held to a throat, a taser and men attacking women, with some blood. Language is strong, with well over 20 f-words. Sex is implied, with a brief partial view of a breast, and there is heavy drinking and a quick scene of cocaine use. The violence on top of the constant profanity is why we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Realistic and jolting rather than gory. A man punches Emily and bloodies her nose, a box cutter is held to a throat, she uses a taser on an attacker, robbers knock people out and lock one in a trunk, and there are a stabbing and a strangling.

Language

Strong

Strong and frequent. Movieguide counted 38 obscenities with more than 21 f-words, and another count puts the f-words above 30. Also 'motherf---er,' 'goddamn,' 'Jesus' as an exclamation, and milder words like 'hell' and 'damn.'

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Emily and Youcef kiss passionately and sex is implied; they are later seen in bed together the next morning, and part of a woman's bare breast is briefly visible. Shirtless men appear in a couple of scenes. Nothing explicit is shown.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Adults drink, sometimes to the point of stumbling. A party montage briefly shows cocaine use, and there is some smoking. The drug use is brief, but it is on screen.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

A steady sense of danger: break-ins, a robbery at the home where Emily is staying, women threatened and hurt by men, and a violent confrontation at a criminal safehouse. Tense rather than scary.

Worth talking about

Emily turns to crime partly because her record and debt lock her out of decent work. Does the film excuse her choices, or show what they cost her?
